Veneers are unlike any other cosmetic dental treatment because they can conceal several imperfections, they can be placed in as little as two appointments, and they can last for well over a decade with proper care. When it comes to prolonging the lifespan of yours, there are a few things you should do (as well as a few things you should avoid). With this in mind, keep reading to learn how to make your veneers last!

1. Switch to a Non-Abrasive Toothpaste

Although veneers look and feel like the real thing, they are crafted from dental materials, like porcelain. As a result, you shouldn’t use regular toothpaste, which contains abrasive ingredients that can create small scratches on the surface. Instead, use a toothpaste made for patients with veneers to keep your smile looking bright and beautiful!

Tip: Ask your dentist for toothpaste recommendations if you’re not sure which one to buy!

2. Avoid Extremely Crunchy Foods

Like your natural teeth, your veneers can break if enough pressure is placed on them. That’s why patients are encouraged to avoid extremely crunchy foods, like raw almonds, peanut brittle, and hard pretzels. It’s also a good idea to steer clear of taffy and other sticky sweets that can tug your veneers out of position.

Tip: Eat softer, more nutrient-dense foods, like plain yogurt and cooked carrots, to help keep your smile healthy from the inside out!

3. Break Bad Habits

Since smoking can negatively impact your gums and drinking alcohol in excess can weaken the bonding agent holding your veneers in place, you should avoid both. Additionally, don’t chew on ice, use your teeth as tools to open things, or do anything else that has the potential to lead to a serious chip, crack, or fracture.

Tip: If you’re having trouble quitting, don’t hesitate to ask your dental team for their recommendations!

4. Visit Your Dentist Every Six Months

Whether you have one veneer or 12 veneers, it’s important that you visit your dentist every six months for a dental checkup and cleaning. After all, even though dental materials like porcelain are decay-resistant, your underlying teeth can still develop cavities. Plus, your dental team uses these routine appointments to conduct a thorough cleaning, helping to keep your smile healthy moving forward.

Tip: Set a reminder on your phone so you don’t forget to schedule a visit twice a year!
